HUIA is a Māori owned independent publisher committed to creating wonderful and provocative books and resources that provide an insight into the diversity of Māori perspectives. Through exploring the stories and aspirations of people in Aotearoa, HUIA aim to provide a mirror for Māori to reflect and interpret their experiences and to open a fascinating window for the rest of the world.
HUIA was established in 1991 with the compelling vision of a New Zealand that valued stories from the people, places and experiences of growing up with: Māori and Pākehā, rich and poor, urban and rural, academics, artists and workers, and the many forms of whānau and/in communities.
Under the leadership of Brian Morris and Eboni Waitere, HUIA strives to contribute to the awareness, education and understanding of Māori perspectives. These perspectives are an inspiration to Māori people and of significant value to New Zealand as a nation as it continues to define, create and express itself nationally and on the world stage.
The HUIA team are highly experienced and passionate about providing a platform for Māori voices to be heard and to deliver beautiful books and resources that delight and inspire readers. A significant part of HUIA’s work is nurturing and encouraging Māori writers. This is achieved through several initiatives that open up a structured pathway in the publishing industry. Through this work, HUIA develop a rich source of reading and the opportunity to see diverse views and worlds.
