Training Workshops
PANZ surveys clearly show that members prioritise chances for networking with other publishers and courses in areas including:
- Digital publishing
- Digital marketing
- Rights
- Contracts
The training workshops are intended to differentiate between beginner and intermediate courses, with overseas presenters brought in where possible and desirable. Regular networking events are held in Auckland and Wellington, with audio-visual links to members elsewhere.
Whitireia Publishing Programme
The Whitireia Publishing Course is New Zealand’s only full-time, industry-led qualification in publishing. Running for over 30 years, it provides an introduction to all aspects of the publishing process, including editing, marketing and book production. From 2026 it will be run in partnership with PANZ, ensuring the continuation of the Graduate Diploma in Publishing (Applied) and related Microcredentials and preserving a vital pathway into the New Zealand publishing industry.
Intern Programme
PANZ and Whitireia’s Graduate Diploma in Publishing programme, in association with Creative New Zealand, provide internship opportunities for three new graduates of the programme to enter the publishing industry each year.
Jobs in Publishing
PANZ welcomes publishers to submit their latest job postings. Contact courtney@publishers.org.nz for details and rates.
International Publishing Courses
The NYU Advanced Publishing Institute (NYU API)
The NYU Advanced Publishing Institute is a premier executive education course designed for mid- to senior-level book publishing professionals interested in the latest strategies and business practices in book publishing.
This immersive, five-day executive education experience is designed specifically for mid- to senior-level publishing professionals looking to lead with impact, expand their networks, and equip themselves with actionable tools and strategies to prepare for what’s next in the industry. A course, not a conference, NYU API offers workshops, strategy sessions, and unique industry case studies to help you expand your knowledge, your professional toolkit, and your business. The program, with a special emphasis on consumer connections, will be conducted by an outstanding group of thought leaders who are paving the way.
Columbia Publishing Course, Oxford UK
The Columbia Publishing Course is aimed primarily at recent college graduates interested in a career that will utilize their love of the written word.
- Additionally, some students have worked in publishing briefly and would like to broaden their understanding of the field or have decided to make a career change from a non-publishing field into publishing.
- Applicants dissatisfied in their current career path are not discouraged!
All applicants to the U.S. program must have successfully completed all requirements for a B.A. or B.S. degree by the start of the course. Only in certain circumstances do we accept students who have yet to finish their undergraduate degrees.
- Most applicants have majored in English and the humanities, but many students have majored in art, economics, business, law, music and the sciences as well.
Students with a demonstrated interest in publishing have always gained the most from the course. Here are just some of the experiences we consider related to publishing:
- Publishing internships
- Photography, graphic arts, sales or marketing experience
- College newspapers, literary journals, blogs, etc.
- Bookstore, library and/or office experience
