Aotearoa School of Publishing Dispatch – June 2026
Our students have just returned from their first work placements brimming with new ideas, connections and enthusiasm for their learning and the industry. The work placements have always been a vital part of the applied nature of the course and demonstrate the strength of partnering with industry. Here’s what our students had to say about their experiences:
“The quantity of tea I drank was impressive, but the number of words I read was out of this world, and I couldn’t have been happier.”
“I loved seeing all the beautiful cloths, ribbons and paper stocks turning into stunning books!”
“It was a fantastic opportunity to explore different roles across publishing—and to discover many, many exciting new titles to add to my TBR.”
“My placement was the perfect combination of realising I do know some things (thanks tutors!), and I want to learn more.”
“A brilliant insight into the behind the scenes of the bookselling world!”
“It was an inspiring two weeks and another brilliant example of how generous people in the industry have been with their time, knowledge and encouragement.”
Our upmost thanks to everyone who offered to open their doors to our students and particular thanks to the staff at Allen & Unwin, Auckland Council Libraries, Auckland University Press, Booksellers NZ, Christchurch Art Gallery, Folly, Hachette, Hansard, Harper Collins, Huia Publishers, Massey University Press, NZSA and PANZ, Oratia, Penguin Random House and Te Herenga Waka University Press for hosting this round of work placements.
The students will go on their second placement at the end of September. If you’re interested in hosting an up-and-coming publisher, please get in touch!
