Publishing Designer: Penguin Random House

We have an exciting opportunity available for a Publishing Designer to join our team based in Auckland.

In this role you will work closely with in-house and freelance designers and illustrators, our Senior Designer, and our full in-house team of publishers, editors and production staff across our entire list – fiction, non-fiction, Māori and children’s books, print, audio and e-books.

You will be responsible for interpreting and challenging creative briefs and researching, developing and delivering innovative book designs that reflect our brand, ultimately driving sales of Penguin Random House titles. You will contribute to pitching, acquisitions and concept development.

You will be well versed in early stage conceptualising, development and internal pitching of ideas that align with broader objectives and goals, and will have a keen understanding of the publishing and design industries, practices, branding and market trends and innovation.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 3+ years’ experience in a graphic design role
  • A passion for books and design with specific experience in book design and layout or experience in a comparable field, laying out text- and image-heavy material.
  • The proven ability to manage projects independently, from concept to final production
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, including a high level of accuracy and care
  • Proven ability to present creative concepts and ideas to multiple stakeholders
  • Experience managing multiple ongoing projects at one time
  • Proficiency with InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • A drive to continuously learn and expand knowledge of relevant design trends and innovations
  • Experience with video creation and production is an advantage
  • Knowledge of Dreamweaver, Flash, CSS, XHTML and Javascript is an advantage
