Based in Palmerston North, New Zealand, Social Behavior: an international journal has been active in scholarly publishing for over 50 years. Publishing 12 issues per year and working with authors all around the world, SBP’s team is predominantly based in New Zealand with some contractors working overseas. The journal receives over 100k downloads per month and is listed in the Social Sciences Citation Index.
SBP is now looking for a new Copyeditor to join the team, operating from their own home office.
About the role
The ideal candidate will be experienced in publishing and/or psychology and will have exceptionally strong writing and editing skills. Copyeditors are required to perform substantial editing of manuscripts to ensure they are well written, correctly structured as scientific reports, and adhere to journal publication style. This work involves formatting manuscripts, checking references lists, editing for fluency and accuracy, and proof-reading.
Manuscripts contain scientific language and present statistical results. All work is presented according to the APA (American Psychological Association) publication style.
The successful applicant will:
- have a minimum of 3 years’ copyediting experience
- have exceptional attention to detail and English language skills
- have experience with APA publication style
- have a natural ability to pinpoint errors or inconsistencies
- have proficiency with Microsoft Word, especially ‘track changes’ and formatting tools
- be self-motivated working from home
- love language and the satisfaction of delivering polished and professional text
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- education or experience with statistics and/or psychology
- relevant tertiary qualifications
- understanding of HTML code for editing directly on our website

The Contractor will be provided with a paid antivirus software, if required.
You will be joining a team of 14 people, located mainly in New Zealand, but also in other countries.
The Contractor will be paid a contract rate of $26.00 (NZD) per hour excluding GST (if any) for each completed hour of work. There will be a maximum of 12 hours per week. These hours may be increased at times.
Copyediting is to be completed remotely. Work is delivered and completed electronically. This would suit someone seeking to supplement other work. Training in journal style will be provided.
